Mauritius Through the Eyes of Muralist and Illustrator Baba Gaïa

Passionate about nature and curious about all forms of artistic expression, Baba Gaïa turns the imagination of nature into her creative playground. Born and based in Mauritius, she draws inspiration from the island’s lush and colorful landscapes.

In 2015, at just 22 years old, Baba Gaïa made her mark on the Mauritian art scene with her first solo exhibition at the Hennessy Park Hotel. Since then, she has continued to expand her artistic reach through group exhibitions, live performances, and large-scale murals — notably at the Dreamers event in 2019 and the iconic mural at Mahogany Shopping Promenade in 2021.

Her work also graces prestigious spaces such as Long Beach Hotel, One&Only Le Saint Géran, and The Good Life, as well as public venues like L’Aventure du Sucre and Bois de Nèfles Primary School. With over 25 murals to her name, her art can be found not only in Mauritius but also in Réunion Island and Rio de Janeiro. She has also collaborated with leading local brands such as ENL, PWC, TERRA, and Ascencia, among others.

Her creative process follows a well-structured method: it begins with a consultation phase to understand the space and its context, followed by sketches and digital mock-ups to visualize the integration of the artwork. Once the final adjustments are made, she brings the project to life using high-quality materials, ensuring both durability and visual impact.

Some ideas, however, can’t be contained within traditional boundaries. Baba Gaïa constantly experiments with new techniques and materials, pushing the limits of artistic expression. Whether through tufted rugs, hand-painted objects, or textile creations, she transforms everyday materials into immersive artistic experiences.

For this talented artist, Mauritius is an endless source of inspiration.

“Its colors, its light, the richness of its biodiversity feed my visual universe. But beyond the aesthetic aspect, it’s also the island’s energy, its cultural blend, and its deep connection to the ocean that shape my artistic approach.”

Far from tourist clichés, her work offers a fresh perspective on Mauritius — where art and nature meet to create an experience that is both immersive and authentic.
